The Period of Josef Frank

11267-o0.jpg

Josef Frank is one of the most important Viennese architects and designers between the wars. Beside his contemporaries Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos he was influenced by the British lifestyle, the period of Biedermeier as well as folk art and the of East Asia. His interior design focused on personal needs of the inhabitants: individual manufactured these pieces of furniture made possible flexible room furnishing. Quality and material are the major criterions of Franks furniture without ornamental decoration. "Alle Gegenstände müssen im Raum beweglich erscheinen.": already in 1912 he took a clear position against the Gesamtkunstwerk. This point of view also is visible in his objects that he designed for his interior company 'Haus & Garten' that he founded in 1925 together with the architect Oskar Wlach. In addition to the exhibition 'Josef Frank - against design' that takes place in the MAK and the Svenskt Tenns popup in Vienna you may find your personal interior object in our Gallery: an original piece of Josef Frank of his contemporaries of the 1920ies or 1930ies.
